For Switzerland it’s clear: Nuclear power is not an acceptable form of energy. Those who produce radioactive waste with a half-life of thousands of years live at the expense of future generations, a fact which diametrically contradicts sustainability.
For this reason, Switzerland must end its use of nuclear power as quickly as possible. Sustainable alternative energy sources and energy efficiency exists, only the political will of the citizens is lacking to promote and use it. Only when the production of nuclear waste has been stopped will we be ready to solve the problems of disposal. As long as the nuclear industry continues to produce nuclear waste, we are not ready. To date, the issue of nuclear waste is not even approaching being solved and it will never be solved, because periods of thousands of years are not really manageable by people.
It seems to me the concept of controlled, monitored and retrievable long-term storage is compelling and therefore its research should continue.
What is clear to me is that the radioactive waste in Switzerland must be stored. Switzerland should have this responsibility and danger and not just export it abroad, but to deal with the problem it has itself caused.
For disposal it is clear that the polluter-pays principle must apply. The disposal costs, including remediation of contaminated sites at home and abroad, are to be paid fully by the nuclear power plant owners. Then it will become clear that nuclear energy was not only environmentally but also economically a totally wrong form of energy production.
