Forum VERA

The expert group appointed by parliament in 1999 set the following goal in ‘Concepts for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste’ (EKRA):

The safe and lasting removal of radioactive waste.

It poses only one question: How? … The goal of Forum VERA is to promote the technical, safe and acceptable disposal of radioactive waste. The forum engages with opponents and advocates of nuclear energy in order to reach a wide social and democratic acceptance of responsibility.

The guidelines can be summed up by three key words - responsibility, sustainability and democracy:

  1. Responsibility distinguishes itself by fighting against the misuse of disposal in the debate about stopping the use of nuclear energy.
  2. Sustainability requires that the user-generation disposes of the waste itself.
  3. Democratic decisions demand step-wise, transparent and lasting solutions.

The goals are set – it now falls to the necessary political will to work for a safe and lasting breakthrough on disposal.
